Abstract

|
Cholinesterase activity of small intestine, liver, pancreas, kidney and spleen was examined in relation to starvation. Adult male albino rats of a pure strain were used as experimental animals, The cholinesterase activity was measured by a colorimetric method which determines the disappearance of acetylcholine-bromide in buffered solution(").
The results obtained are summerized as follows.
1. Cholinesterase activity of small intestine, liver, pancreas, kidney and spleen in normal rats were 4.70 micro-mole (yM)f0.381cM, 1.05,,yM0,09,uM, 0.14,UM t0.01tiM, 0.431M t0.02;cM and ¢¥. 0.291cM0.0lyM respectively.
2. During 24 hours of starvation, the cholinesterase activity of liver and pancreas did not parallel with a decrease of protein(,) of liver and pancreas. But thereafter till 192 hours of starvation, the cholinesterase activity of liver and pancreas paralleled with a decrease of protein of liver and pancreas(").
3. During starvation till 192 hours of starvation, the cholinesterase activities of small intestine ? declined parallel with a decrease of protein of small intestine (11).
4. The cholinesterase activities of spleen decreased till 192 hours of starvation.
5. There were generally no changes in the cholinesterase activities of kidney during starvation till
192 hours of starvation.
